Welcome to ManSEDS

We are the Manchester Students for the Exploration and Development of Space. We invite speakers, take trips and get information on the spaceflight industry.

We are part of the international student body SEDS, coordinated in Britain by UKSEDS. This national and international access provides our members with extensive opportunities. UKSEDS organise trips to ESA and Star City Moscow (where cosmonauts are trained) and an annual national conference to which the best speakers on space are invited.

If you are looking for a career in spaceflight, or merely have an interest in this frontier of human endeavour, come along to any of our events.

If you have any questions - what we do, where to find us, how to join or anything else - please e-mail us here.

UK Space Conference, 27th -29th March 2008, Charterhouse School, Surrey

The UK Space Conference will play host to a number of events and networking opportunities for space science students and enthusiasts. Guest speakers include directors from several well established spaceflight industries, as well as NASA astronaut, Joe Engle.

Thanks to their sponsors, UKSEDS are able to subsidise a limited number of places at the conference for their student members: free entry on the student day (organised by UKSEDS) and £20 per day for every other day. Please let us know if you are interested.

In other news, a US spy satellite was shot down by the US Navy this morning. Having lost control of the craft shortly after launch, it's orbit has been decaying ever since. Concerns about the toxic hydrazine fuel, and probably various bits of interesting data, on board made it necessary to destroy the satellite before it fell to Earth. The US Department of Defense issued this press release this morning, along with a video.

Update on Space Station talk

We have changed the venue for the talk on the 24th of October, Space Station: A Century in the Making. The talk will now be held in Meeting Room 1 in the Students' Union. Sorry for any confusion caused; there are good reasons for this.

Hope to see you there!

Change of date for Jodrell trip!

Please note that the trip we are taking to Jodrell to the SPACE50 event is now on Friday the 6th, due to Saturday selling out. At the last count there were 7 tickets left. There should be four car seats left, so if anyone has already bought tickets and needs a lift, let us know.

The Dawn of the space-age

Anyone interested in going to Jodrell Bank to see the SPACE50 presentation, celebrating the dawn of the space-age, on Friday 5th October should e-mail the committee as soon as possible. We regrettably have limited transport, so places will be first come, first served. You are of course welcome to go otherwise, if you can find your own way there. See the events page for more info.

In other news NASA's Dawn mission to Vesta and Ceres in the asteroid belt, launches this Thursday around noon. The launch window is between 12:20 and 12:49 BST (British Summer Time) and there will be live coverage on NASA TV, which you can watch online here.

Welcome to ManSEDS 2007/08!

Hello everyone! Thanks to everyone who signed up at the Fresher's Fair and thanks to the rest of the committee for manning the stall. ManSEDS may not be able to send you all into space, but we're certainly hoping to line up plenty of interesting talks, trips and socials. Some other ideas have been suggested too so, if you'll pardon the pun, watch this space.

Look forward to some improvements on the website too. I'm going to jazz it up quite a bit. I'll also try to create a poll to vote for the film for our upcoming film night social.

See you soon,
Leo
